Kybella non-invasive treatment for double chin

“Double chin” is one of the most frustrating issues for patients, because it can be a stubborn area that does not respond to exercise or diet. Until recently, the only solution was surgery. KYBELLA® (deoxycholic acid) injection is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment that is used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called, “double chin.” Dr. Copeland is one of the first plastic surgeons in the area to offer Kybella, and has found it to be very effective. Patients have been very pleased with resulting improvement of the area under the chin, and have reported only mild swelling and soreness. Kybella is administered via injection, and two to four treatments are recommended over an 8-12 week period.

FAQ

What is Kybella?

KYBELLA® (deoxycholic acid) injection is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment that is used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called, “double chin.”

Am I a good candidate for Kybella?

If you are bothered by a “double chin,” then the next step is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Copeland. She will explain the treatment process, show you before and after pictures of recent patients, and together, you can decide if Kybella is right for you.

Where and when can I get it done?

Kybella is an in-office procedure and requires no downtime, so can be scheduled at your convenience and you can return to your normal activities immediately. Dr. Copeland’s office is conveniently located on the Upper East Side across from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Why should I see a plastic surgeon? How much experience does Dr. Copeland have with Kybella?

As a leading plastic surgeon, Dr. Copeland was one of the first in the area to offer Kybella to patients who want to improve their chin area and jawline, and has treated many patients successfully. In addition, Dr. Copeland is a Harvard- trained, board-certified plastic surgeon who can discuss Kybella along with other non-surgical and surgical procedures to help you achieve your goals.

Is Kybella permanent or is it temporary like Botox?

When injected into the fat under your chin, Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. Once you have decided that you have achieved your goals, retreatment with Kybella is not expected.

Will the skin on my neck sag after the Kybella treatment?

One of the benefits of Kybella is that the skin tends to tighten as healing occurs, and is visible over time. For patients who would like to address double chin concerns and sagging skin, Dr. Copeland may suggest skin tightening techniques, which work well in combination with Kybella. These options may be discussed during your consultation.

What is the downtime or recovery needed after the injection?

Most patients experience slight discomfort similar to other injectables for a brief period of time after the injection. Patients experience different degrees of swelling, but it is a normal part of the healing process and quickly resolves. Patients report less discomfort and/or swelling for subsequent treatments.

How long does it take to see results?

Results vary depending on the amount of excess fat you have under your chin. Results become visible once any swelling or bruising is resolved and patients report noticeable improvement in the jawline as quickly as 3-4 weeks after the first treatment.

How many treatments do I need?

Dr. Copeland will discuss your treatment goals with you during consultation. Most patients receive at least two treatments no less than one month apart, and can achieve more improvement with additional treatments.

What can I expect for my second or third Kybella treatments?

Dr. Copeland has many patients who have received multiple treatments, and most patients experience substantially less swelling and bruising compared to the first treatment, and show improved jawline contour and skin tightness with subsequent treatments.

Does Kybella require anesthesia?

No, Kybella is administered in our regular patient exam rooms, and topical numbing is applied to the chin and neck area, similar to Botox or other injections.

How much does it cost?

Pricing for Kybella is based on your treatment plan and how many injections you may need. After your consultation with Dr. Copeland, you will receive a detailed, written estimate of costs for Kybella and any other treatment options you discuss.

How many people have been treated with Kybella?

Kybella has been the focus of a global clinical development program involving over 20 clinical studies with more than 2,600 patients worldwide, of which over 1,600 have been treated with Kybella.
