What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, medically known as a mastopexy, is performed to lift sagging breasts by removing excess skin, reshaping the underlying breast tissue, and repositioning the nipple and areola to a more youthful position, while also improving the overall shape of the breasts. Many women choose this procedure after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, aging, or when changes in breast shape and firmness no longer reflect how they feel about themselves.

While a breast lift improves breast position and contour, it does not significantly increase breast size, which is why some patients choose to combine it with breast augmentation or breast reduction.

Who Are the Best Candidates for the Breast Lift Procedure?

The best candidates for a breast lift in New York City are those with some of the following characteristics:

  • Your breasts have begun to sag or lose their youthful position.
  • Your nipples sit below the inframammary fold (breast crease) or point downward.
  • You have developmental concerns, such as tuberous breasts, that may benefit from surgical reshaping.
  • Your breasts have become uneven, lost volume, or changed after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, or aging.
  • You are happy with your breast size but would like a firmer, more lifted appearance.
  • You are at a healthy weight, are in good overall health, and can avoid major weight fluctuations before and after surgery.
  • You have realistic expectations for surgery.

How to Begin Your Breast Lift Journey

The first step in getting a breast lift in New York City is scheduling a consultation with Dr. Michelle Copeland or Dr. Libby Copeland-Halperin to discuss your goals, medical history, and desired outcome.

Your surgeon will then examine your breasts and learn of your desires and needs for your final breast appearance. The goal is to create breasts that are in proportion with the rest of your body. This consultation is also where your surgeon will explain the breast lift process in detail, recommend the breast lift technique best suited to your anatomy, review the associated risks and benefits, discuss incision placement, and answer any questions you have before surgery.

Your surgeon will also share other procedures that are commonly combined with a breast lift, including breast augmentation, should you choose to do one.

If you both agree to proceed with the procedure, your surgeon will create a surgical plan tailored to your anatomy and goals, since the best breast lift procedure varies from patient to patient. You can then take that plan to our expert team, who will provide a detailed, written quote, schedule your treatment, discuss payment and financing options, including financing available through Alphaeon, and provide any pre-operative instructions.

How Do I Prepare for My Breast Lift?

Preparing for a breast lift is an important part of achieving a smooth recovery and beautiful, long-term results. Before surgery, you should:

  • Complete any requested medical testing or breast imaging based on your health history.
  • Stop smoking and avoid nicotine products well before surgery to promote proper healing.
  • Avoid medications and supplements that increase bleeding unless approved by your surgeon.
  • Maintain a stable weight before surgery, as significant fluctuations can affect your results.
  • Prepare your recovery area at home with supportive pillows, comfortable clothing, and any prescribed medications.
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you during your first night after surgery.
  • Follow all eating and drinking instructions provided before anesthesia.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Lift Surgery

On the day of your breast lift, your surgeon and her staff will welcome you to the practice, settle you in the procedure room, and ensure you have had a chance to review the surgical plan in case you have any outlying questions. A board-certified anesthesiologist will administer general anesthesia based on your personalized surgical plan, ensuring you remain comfortable and closely monitored throughout your procedure.

Once you are comfortably under anesthesia, your surgeon will make carefully planned incisions based on your anatomy and surgical goals. Excess breast skin and, when appropriate, excess tissue are removed, the remaining breast tissue is reshaped, and the nipple-areola complex is repositioned to create a firmer, more youthful breast contour.

Once the desired shape has been achieved, the incisions are meticulously closed, and a supportive surgical bra is applied before you begin recovery.

On average, a breast lift will take anywhere from two to three hours to complete.

Combining My Breast Lift with Other Procedures

Many women choose to combine a breast lift with another procedure to achieve more comprehensive breast or body rejuvenation while recovering only once. During your consultation, Dr. Michelle Copeland and Dr. Libby Copeland-Halperin will carefully evaluate your anatomy, discuss your goals, and determine which combination of procedures can safely provide the most balanced, natural-looking outcome. Every surgical plan is customized to complement your proportions, lifestyle, and long-term aesthetic goals.

Breast Augmentation

A breast lift restores breast position but does not significantly increase breast volume. Patients who would also like fuller breasts or increased upper-pole fullness often choose to combine a breast lift with breast implants or fat transfer. By addressing both breast shape and volume during the same procedure, Dr. Michelle Copeland and Dr. Libby Copeland-Halperin can create a more youthful, balanced contour while tailoring the results to complement your natural proportions and aesthetic goals.

Breast Reduction with a Lift

Women with breasts that feel excessively large or heavy may benefit from combining a breast lift with breast reduction surgery. Excess tissue, excess breast skin, and underlying breast tissue are carefully reshaped while simultaneously lifting the breasts, creating a lighter, more comfortable, and more youthful contour.

Breast Lift Recovery

After surgery, you will be monitored in our recovery room by the staff to make sure you come out of sedation completely. For safety, patients are still recommended to have a family member or a friend drive them home.

Patients will likely experience soreness, bruising, and swelling for several days. To help with swelling, patients will initially wear a surgical compression bra, followed by a supportive bra for several weeks. Any strenuous activity should be avoided until the skin incisions have healed, which can take 4-6 weeks.

7 Tips for Recovery From a Breast Lift

  1. Wear your surgical bra exactly as directed to minimize swelling and support healing.
  2. Sleep on your back with your upper body elevated during the first several weeks.
  3. Take medications exactly as prescribed, and avoid any medications not approved by your surgeon.
  4. Avoid lifting, pushing, or strenuous upper-body activity until you’re cleared.
  5. Stay well hydrated and eat a nutritious diet to support healing.
  6. Attend every scheduled follow-up appointment so your recovery can be monitored.
  7. Allow your breasts time to settle naturally as swelling gradually improves over the coming months.
