PRP and PRF Hair Restoration

Introduction to PRP and PRF Hair Restoration

More than 80% of men and nearly 50% of women will experience hair loss (alopecia) in their lifetimes. This can be due to hormonal changes, autoimmune problems, nutritional deficiencies, or simply genetics. To address hair loss, many patients opt for hair restoration techniques that involve the surgical transplantation of follicles from one area of the scalp to another. These techniques are effective, though they may involve longer recovery times due to the intensive nature of the procedures.

Using regenerative medicine, Dr. Copeland and Dr. Copeland-Halperin offer two minimally-invasive alternatives to surgery: platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) hair restoration to prompt the patient’s own healing process to regenerate and restore hair density. Dr. Copeland and Dr. Copeland-Halperin recommend PRP and PRF hair restoration for their patients who might otherwise not want to undergo extensive downtime to restore their natural hair growth. They work with each patient to develop a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs and hair loss stage, maximizing your chances of successful, natural-looking results, and personally administer all treatments to patients. Read on to learn more about how PRP and PRF hair restoration can help you!

What are PRP and PRF Hair Restoration?

What are PRP and PRF Hair Restoration?

PRP and PRF hair restoration are minimally invasive techniques to restore hair growth and density by using the patient’s own blood to stimulate their natural healing process. PRP hair restoration involves taking a small amount of the patient’s blood and using a centrifuge to separate out their plasma (that contains growth factors) which is then injected into the areas of low hair growth. PRF hair restoration is a newer, cutting-edge technique whereby a small amount of blood is prepared by centrifuge and the platelet, fibrin and growth factors are separated out in a higher concentration and injected into areas of low hair growth. These processes help stimulate regeneration of hair follicles.

What Are the Benefits of PRP and PRF Hair Restoration?

PRP and PRF hair restoration have numerous benefits above and beyond traditional surgical hair restoration techniques. Our patients have reported the following benefits from their PRP and PRF hair restoration procedures:

  • Visible improvement in hair growth and density
  • Ability to regrow patient’s own natural hair and recapture their original, youthful hairline
  • Faster recovery times when compared to traditional surgical procedures
  • Minimally-invasive treatment – no downtime or disruption to regular activities

PRP or PRF Hair Restoration Recovery

The most common side effects our patients experience after receiving a PRP or PRF hair restoration procedure are mild swelling, itching, and, in some cases, a mild headache. These side effects are normal and temporary as the injections work to stimulate the body’s healing and regeneration process.

If you are feeling more discomfort than you would like to tolerate, ice packs applied to the area or taking over-the-counter pain management medication are recommended. Regular use of Dr. Michelle Copeland Skin Care Rewind Revitalizing Shampoo and Reparative Conditioner will help make hair visibly thicker and fuller.
